History
1951 - The Natal Industries Medical Aid Society (NIMAS) was formed. It catered specifically for the needs of industrially-based employers and employees who were members of the then Natal Chamber of Industries.
1977 - NIMAS revised its name to NIMED Medical Aid Society in anticipation of the formation of a trio of Schemes to be known as NIMAX, NIMED and NIMIN.
1993 - NIMED ceased to be associated with the Natal Chamber of Industries and re-positioned itself in the medical schemes industry as the National Independent Medical Aid Society, reverting to its original acronym: NIMAS.
2006 - NIMAS outsourced its administration to Metropolitan Health.
